Designed for the traveler who refuses to rush. We add breathing room to the classic circuit, allowing you to linger in the Dzongs and walk the nature trails.
Your host meets you at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or NJP Station. We drive through the verdant tea estates of the Dooars to the Bhutan Gate. As you cross over, the noise fades. Complete your immigration formalities and settle into the border town.
Overnight: Phuentsholing
We begin the ascent to the capital. Unlike the express tours, we take our time winding through the mist-covered mountains of Gedu and Chukha. Stop at the Confluence (Chuzom), where the Paro and Thimphu rivers meet. Arrive in Thimphu (7,700 ft) by evening.
Overnight: Thimphu
A full day dedicated to the capital. Stand in awe of the massive Buddha Dordenma overlooking the valley. Spin the prayer wheels at the National Memorial Chorten. Visit the Arts & Crafts School to watch students master the 13 traditional arts of Bhutan. In the evening, explore the Tashichho Dzong, the seat of the government and the King’s office.
Overnight: Thimphu
We drive up to the Dochula Pass (10,100 ft). On a clear day, the snow-capped Himalayas form a jagged horizon behind the 108 chortens. Descend into the sub-tropical Punakha valley. We take a gentle walk through rice paddies and mustard fields to reach Chimi Lhakhang (The Temple of the Divine Madman), famous for its fertility blessings.
Overnight: Punakha
Morning visit to the Punakha Dzong—the "Palace of Great Happiness"—sitting majestically at the river confluence. We then drive to Phobjikha, a vast U-shaped glacial valley. Here, we step out of the car for the Gangtey Nature Trail (a 1.5-hour easy walk) through pine forests, offering unobstructed views of the valley floor.
Overnight: Phobjikha
Wake up to the mist of the valley. We retrace our path towards Paro. En route, we stop at Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress in the kingdom. Arrive in Paro, a town that feels trapped in a beautiful time capsule with its traditional wooden shophouses.
Overnight: Paro
The highlight of the journey. We hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), clinging to a sheer cliff 900 meters above the valley. Legend says Guru Rinpoche flew here on a tigress to subdue a demon. The energy inside the cave is palpable. (Pony services available for the uphill leg).
Overnight: Paro
A leisurely morning. We visit the National Museum (Ta Dzong) before beginning the descent back to the Indian border. Watch the landscape shift from alpine pine to tropical jungle one last time.
Overnight: Phuentsholing
Breakfast and transfer to Bagdogra/NJP. You leave the Kingdom, but the "Gross National Happiness" stays with you.
