A water-centric itinerary in the wettest region on the planet. From the colonial vibes of Shillong to the crystal clear waters of the Umngot River, this is a short, immersive dive into Meghalaya.
Arrive at Guwahati Airport/Station. We drive straight to Shillong (3 hrs). Stop at the majestic Umiam Lake (Barapani)—a massive reservoir surrounded by sylvan hills. Arrive in Shillong, a city with a distinct rock-n-roll soul. Evening free at Police Bazaar.
Overnight: Shillong
Drive to Cherrapunji (Sohra). The landscape changes to dramatic limestone cliffs and mist. Visit the Seven Sisters Falls and the Nohkalikai Falls (India’s tallest plunge waterfall). Explore the Mawsmai Cave to see centuries-old stalactites.
Overnight: Cherrapunji
Drive to the Indo-Bangladesh border town of Dawki. The Umngot River here is famous for its transparency—boats look like they are floating in mid-air. Enjoy boating and visit the border post. Later, visit Mawlynnong (Asia’s Cleanest Village) and see the Single Decker Living Root Bridge. Stay in a riverside camp or cottage near Dawki/Shnongpdeng.
Overnight: Dawki / Shnongpdeng
Drive back to Shillong. En route, visit Elephant Falls. In the afternoon, explore the Don Bosco Museum (a 7-storey architectural marvel showcasing NE culture) or visit Ward’s Lake. End the day with a cafe hop in Laitumkhrah.
Overnight: Shillong
